Hot Tubs and the City of Medicine Hat. I was unprepared for the level of permits, inspections, and regulations to get a hot tub installed in my back yard. I live in an older neighbourhood (1970s) and many of my neighbours have hot tubs in their backyards with the hot tub placed in various locations so I assumed I would be permitted to have one. I ordered a hot tub in the winter of 2021 and when it was set to arrive, I consulted with a Master Electrician about the preferred location and wiring options. I was told that some of my placement positions were not allowed as they were too close to an outlet or meter. I was also told that my 100-amp service to my home was insufficient for the additional load for the hot tub. I have an air conditioner, range, and dryer that require 240 volt service. Original suggestions were to have a service upgrade, which includes an additional conductor trenched into my home, or to have a kitchen renovation to remove my electric range and replace it with a gas system. Both options could be very costly and not what I had originally planned. The local hot tub supplier informed me that Sweet Grass Electric LTD. had an option to install a smart switch that would be connected to two different devices and send power to only one of them at a time. Typically, the system is set up to be connected to your range and your hot tub with the range being the primary appliance. This means that if your range is on your hot tub is off but as soon as you shut off your range the hot tub receives power again. While this option is not the most ideal it is significantly cheaper than the service upgrade or the kitchen renovation. In addition to finding a solution to my problem Kailen at Sweet Grass Electric LTD. was very responsive to any and all questions I had regarding the project. His customer service is excellent and I always felt that my project was one of his top priorities. It took multiple meetings between Kailen and the City of Medicine Hat inspectors before it passed and I appreciate the diligence of each party.
